RSI Overbought strategy

RSI crossing above 70 - entering overbought territory

What is the RSI Overbought?

An RSI reading above 70 tells you that gains have overwhelmed losses over the last 14 candles to an unusual degree. Markets can stay in that state for a while during powerful trends, so the interesting moment for a short seller is not when RSI enters the zone but when it starts to leave it: momentum is cooling, and the rally that pushed the reading up is no longer being fed.

In crypto, where retail-driven pumps and funding-rate excesses regularly push prices beyond what the underlying demand supports, an overbought fade is one of the most popular mean-reversion trades. The idea is to sell strength as it fades rather than to guess the top.

How the RSI Overbought works

Sindex computes a 14-period RSI on closing prices. The scanner marks the overbought zone at 70 and looks at the last two readings: the signal fires on the bar where RSI closes at or below 70 after the previous bar closed above 70. In other words, the setup catches the exit from overbought territory, when the RSI has already been stretched and is now rolling over.

The score is built from 50 plus a bonus tied to how far above 70 the reading remains. Because the signal bar has by definition dipped to 70 or below, most matches sit close to the base score, and the list is best sorted by your own read of the price structure rather than by score alone.

The strategy needs only 20 candles, so it runs on every timeframe from 15m to 1d. Signals on 4h and 12h charts tend to mark swing highs; on 15m and 30m charts they describe intraday exhaustion that may resolve within a few hours.

Rules

Entry rules

  • Enter only after the candle that brings RSI back to 70 or below has closed.
  • Look for a rejection candle at the high, such as a long upper wick or a bearish engulfing bar, on the same or the previous candle.
  • The high should be near resistance or a prior supply area; shorting into open sky is lower probability.
  • Prefer bearish divergence, where price made a higher high but RSI made a lower high before rolling over.
  • Enter on the close of the signal bar or on a weak retest of the high that fails to make a new high.

Exit rules

  • Stop above the swing high that produced the overbought reading.
  • First target at the 20-period average or the midpoint of the rally; second target at the base from which the rally launched.
  • Setup fails if RSI climbs back above 70 and price closes above the swing high.
  • If price refuses to fall and RSI flattens above 60, the trend is absorbing the selling and the short should be reduced.

Best conditions

  • In a downtrend or range on the higher timeframe, where the overbought reading is a rally into resistance.
  • After a parabolic pump with extremely positive funding, which sets up a crowded long side.
  • When the overbought reading came on declining volume, indicating buyers are thinning out.
  • On 1h to 4h charts where the fade has time to play out.

Pitfalls

  • Strong uptrends can keep RSI above 70 for days; the first dip below the line is frequently just a pause.
  • Shorting an altcoin during a sector-wide rotation can be run over by continued inflows.
  • Bearish signals on low timeframes often resolve as sideways consolidation rather than a real drop.
  • Risk reminder: an overbought market can become more overbought; use a hard stop and moderate leverage.

RSI Overbought FAQ

Does the scanner trigger when RSI crosses above 70 or back below it?
The Sindex scanner fires when the 14-period RSI, having been above 70 on the previous bar, closes at or below 70. That captures the moment overbought momentum begins to fade rather than the moment it begins.
Is RSI above 70 always bearish?
No. In a trending market RSI above 70 is a sign of strength, and shorting it blindly is a losing approach. The setup works best when the overbought reading aligns with resistance and shows divergence.
What RSI settings does Sindex use?
A 14-period RSI on closing prices with 70 as the overbought threshold, the same defaults most charting platforms use.
