Bollinger Squeeze Long strategy

Price breaks above upper band after tight squeeze

What is the Bollinger Squeeze Long?

Bollinger Bands wrap a 20-period moving average with an upper and lower band set two standard deviations away. Because standard deviation measures volatility, the bands contract when the market is quiet and expand when it is moving. A squeeze is a period of unusually narrow bands, and the long version of this strategy looks for price to break upward out of that compression.

Volatility in crypto is cyclical: long stretches of tight range are followed by explosive moves. Traders watch the squeeze because it identifies the coiled state before the release, and the direction of the first strong close out of the bands often sets the tone for the next several sessions.

How the Bollinger Squeeze Long works

Sindex calculates Bollinger Bands with a 20-period average and a 2 standard deviation multiplier on closing prices. It then measures bandwidth, the distance between the upper and lower band divided by the middle band, on the current bar and on the last ten bars. A squeeze is flagged when the current bandwidth is less than 80 percent of the ten-bar average.

There are two ways a symbol can qualify. The strong version, scored at 90, is a close above the upper band, meaning price has broken out of the volatility envelope. The early version fires while the squeeze is still in place if price is above the middle band and the latest close is higher than the previous close; it scores between 60 and 90 depending on how tight the squeeze is. The scanner description tells you which case you are looking at.

Only 25 candles are needed, so the strategy runs on every timeframe from 15m to 1d. Squeezes on 4h and daily charts precede the largest moves; on 15m and 30m they resolve within hours and suit intraday traders.

Rules

Entry rules

  • For the breakout case, wait for a full candle close above the upper band rather than an intrabar poke.
  • For the early case, confirm the bands are visibly narrow and price is holding above the 20-period middle line.
  • Look for expanding volume on the breakout candle; a squeeze release without volume is suspect.
  • Enter on the close of the signal bar or on a shallow retest of the upper band that holds.
  • Check the higher timeframe so you are not buying a breakout directly into a major resistance level.

Exit rules

  • Stop below the middle band or below the low of the squeeze range, whichever fits your position size.
  • Ride the move while price keeps closing above the middle band; a close back inside the bands after an extended run is a warning.
  • Setup is invalidated if price closes back below the middle band shortly after the breakout.
  • Take partial profit at a measured move equal to the height of the squeeze range projected upward.

Best conditions

  • When the squeeze has lasted many bars and bandwidth is at a multi-week low.
  • In an established uptrend, where the squeeze is a consolidation before continuation.
  • When a catalyst such as a market-wide rally or news event supplies the volume for the breakout.
  • On 4h and daily charts where compressed ranges tend to precede the biggest expansions.

Pitfalls

  • Head fakes are common: price pokes above the upper band, reverses, and breaks the other way.
  • A close above the upper band in a market that is not squeezed is just an extended reading, not a breakout.
  • In ranging markets the bands contract and expand repeatedly without a directional move.
  • Risk reminder: volatility breakouts move fast in both directions; set the stop before the entry fills, especially with leverage.

Bollinger Squeeze Long FAQ

What Bollinger Band settings does Sindex use?
A 20-period moving average with bands at 2 standard deviations. Squeeze detection compares current bandwidth to the average of the last ten bars and flags a squeeze when it is below 80 percent of that average.
Does the scanner require a squeeze before the breakout?
A close above the upper band qualifies on its own with the top score. The squeeze condition is used for an earlier, lower-scored signal where price is rising above the middle band while the bands are still tight.
How do I tell a real breakout from a head fake?
Volume expansion, a strong candle body, and follow-through on the next bar all support a genuine breakout. A wick above the band with a close back inside is the classic fake.
Can I test this squeeze rule before trading it?
Yes. Algo Forge lets you construct Bollinger conditions with your own bandwidth threshold and backtest them on historical crypto futures data.
