Bollinger Squeeze Short strategy

Price breaks below lower band after tight squeeze

What is the Bollinger Squeeze Short?

The short side of the Bollinger Squeeze targets the moment a quiet market resolves downward. After the bands have contracted around a narrow range, a decisive close below the lower band shows that volatility is expanding on the sell side, and the participants who built positions during the calm are now being forced out.

This setup is popular with crypto short sellers because breakdowns from consolidation often accelerate as stops and liquidations cluster just below the range. Rather than shorting into an ongoing drop, you are catching the transition from low volatility to high volatility at its start.

How the Bollinger Squeeze Short works

Sindex builds 20-period Bollinger Bands at 2 standard deviations and computes bandwidth as upper minus lower divided by the middle band. The current bandwidth is compared with the average of the last ten bars; when it falls below 80 percent of that average, the market is considered squeezed.

The strongest signal, scored at 90, is a close below the lower band. A secondary, earlier signal triggers during a squeeze if price is below the middle band and the latest close is lower than the previous one; its score ranges from 60 up toward 90 as the squeeze tightens. The description on each scanner result indicates whether it is a full breakdown or a squeeze with bearish momentum.

The minimum history is 25 candles, so all timeframes from 15m to 1d are covered. Daily and 4h breakdowns from long squeezes tend to produce multi-day moves; short-timeframe squeezes resolve quickly and are better suited to scalping.

Rules

Entry rules

  • For the breakdown case, wait for the candle to close below the lower band.
  • For the early case, confirm the bands are tight and price is trading below the 20-period middle line.
  • Volume should expand on the breakdown candle.
  • Short on the close of the signal bar or on a bounce to the lower band that gets rejected.
  • Make sure a major higher-timeframe support level is not directly beneath the breakdown point.

Exit rules

  • Stop above the middle band or above the high of the squeeze range.
  • Hold while price keeps closing below the middle band; a close back above it invalidates the setup.
  • Take partial profit at a measured move equal to the range height projected downward.
  • If the bands stop expanding and price stalls, the release has run its course and the short should be closed.

Best conditions

  • After a long consolidation with bandwidth at a multi-week low.
  • In a higher-timeframe downtrend, where the squeeze is a pause before continuation.
  • During market-wide risk-off moves that supply sustained selling volume.
  • On 4h and daily charts where the biggest expansions occur.

Pitfalls

  • Downside head fakes are common; a wick below the lower band that closes back inside is a trap.
  • Closing below the band in an already trending, wide-band market is not a squeeze breakout and often precedes a bounce.
  • Choppy markets contract and expand the bands repeatedly with no follow-through.
  • Risk reminder: shorts into volatility expansion can be squeezed violently; set the stop first and keep leverage modest.

Bollinger Squeeze Short FAQ

How does Sindex detect the squeeze for the short setup?
It compares the current 20-period, 2 standard deviation bandwidth with the average bandwidth of the last ten bars. When the current value is under 80 percent of that average the bands are considered squeezed.
Is a close below the lower Bollinger Band bearish?
Following a squeeze it usually marks the start of a downside expansion. Without a squeeze it can simply mean price is stretched, which sometimes precedes a snapback.
How far can a squeeze breakdown travel?
There is no fixed target. A common approach is to project the height of the consolidation range downward and to trail the stop above the middle band while the bands keep expanding.
